How does public transport in Prague work?

Public transport in Prague is widely considered one of the best and most reliable systems in the world. As of 2026, the system (known as PID – Prague Integrated Transport) has introduced updated fares that prioritize digital payments.

Everything—Metro, Trams, Buses, Trains (within Prague), Ferries, and the Petřín Funicular—operates under a single ticket system

Tips for Travelers
  • Download the "PID Lítačka" App: It is the easiest way to buy tickets, search for connections, and see live delays.
  • Contactless Payment: Every tram and bus in Prague is equipped with a terminal (usually orange) where you can buy a ticket directly with your credit/debit card.
  • Don't "Black Ride": Ticket inspectors wear plain clothes and show a small metal badge. Fines for traveling without a valid ticket are 1,200 CZK if paid on the spot.
